Prunes Planted on the Gobi Desert lead the way to prosperity
BOLE, Sept. 17 (Huyangnet) -- “It’s all Gobi Desert around here. The soil is relatively loose and the fruit that grows here can be very sweet. We will buy as many prunes as the company planted.” On September 5, Song Wenqi, area manager of Xinjiang Yuqi Biological Technology Development Co., Ltd., and Wu Shi Mao Xiaohua, an employee of the 14th Company of the 86th Regiment of the 5th Division of XPCC, inspected the growth of prunes.
Although the prunes planted by Mao Xiaohua were fruit-bearing in the first year, they have attracted merchants to buy them.
The 14th Company of the 86th Regiment is adjacent to the Wutai Gobi Desert, where the land is barren and the ecological environment is fragile, which is one of the main wind regions of the group. In 2017, Mao Xiaohua took fully use of national policy awards and funds to contract 50 mu of land for planting prunes in the Gobi Desert. After a series of preparing like laying buried pipelines, drip irrigation belts, and careful management, the survival rate of prunes planted by Mao Xiaohua is above 95%. He also raises turkeys in the woodland to further broaden income channels.
Mao Xiaohua told the author that the current price of prunes is 25 yuan per kilogram, and more than 100 turkeys raised in the ground have been sold, so he doesn’t worry about the sales and the income is expected to surpass 200,000 yuan next year.
Mao Xiaohua's success has brought confidence to other company employees to join the business. This year, the 14th Company and the surrounding 15th and 18th Company have 11 employees planting featured fruit trees on the land returned to forest, covering an area of 1,500 mu, with the survival rate of seedlings over 90%.
At present, the total area of ecological forest in the regiment has reached 12,000 mu.
